How Fathers, Family, Friends Can Help
"A simple blood test can predict who will suffer from postpartum depression. Researchers at Johns Hopkins tested 52 pregnant women and found those with two specific genes were at high risk. Doctors say a test to detect the genes was accurate 85 percent ..."
It happens in Sri Lanka. It happens in Canada and the United States of America. Babies are being killed by their mothers because of the ill effects of Postpartum Depression. Due to the chronic nature and recurance of Major Depressive Disorder in pregnant women researcher's and the IEMMHC support the need for proper screenings in order to treat pregnant women for depression. This article is especially interesting to the collaborative because it is the first meta-analysis to examine gestational age, birth weight, and Apgar scores among infants exposed to antidepressant medications in utero; leading to statistically significant associations for pregnancy outcomes.
Peter Dunne, Associate Minister of Health for New Zealand, in his address to the Perinatal Health Trust on on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, outlined his countries plan to address the problem of maternal mental health. He stated that:
An NIMH-funded research study in rats identifies a specific group of cells in the brainstem whose activation during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep helped in eradicating unwanted memories, paving the way for future therapeutics for these disorders.
It should be joyous, however, sometimes it is not an easy experience.
Although statistically significant associations between antidepressant exposure and pregnancy and delivery outcomes were identified, group differences were small and scores in the exposed group were typically in the normal ranges indicating the importance of considering clinical significance.
There is a alot of responsibility that comes with taking care of a new baby. With that responsility can come anxiety.
