Perinatal Substance Abuse Treatment

Perinatal substance abuse programs are specialized treatment programs designed specifically for women who are:

  • Pregnant
  • Postpartum (first year of life)
  • Parenting women (raising children ages 0 to 5)

The purpose of these treatment programs is to help women stop abusing drugs or alcohol. These are confidential (private) programs that focus on rehabilitating a mother’s life. Services are often at no cost so mothers may have a break from parenting so she may focus on her recovery and building a brighter future.

Services typically include:

  • Individual treatment
  • Family treatment
  • Group counseling
  • Health and nutrition education
  • Parenting classes
  • Skill building (e.g. relationship, self-esteem, coping)
  • Resource and referral to other community programs to help the family (i.e., food pantries, free or low-cost dentistry, marriage counseling, etc.)

Services MAY also include:

  • Child care
  • Bus passes or other forms of transportation to help women get to the treatment program
  • Developmental screenings for your infant / child
  • Coordination of medical care

Types of Treatment MAY include:

  • Residential (live-in program)
  • Day treatment (e.g. 4 half-days a week)
  • Outpatient (2-3 groups a week)
